Helping the “Homeless” Find Homes

In 1982, just a couple of years after I became a realtor, I was honored in a way I’ll never forget. My friend’s eight-year-old son, Ben, had an assignment in school: name three people they respected the most—aside from family—and explain why. Ben’s choices? The president, the pope, and me!

Being grouped with such iconic figures was thrilling, but his reason is what truly touched me: “She helps homeless people find homes.”

While Ben’s description was a bit exaggerated, his words stuck with me over the past 42 years. Though my clients aren’t literally “homeless,” many face unique, sometimes heartbreaking challenges when buying or selling their homes. From the start, I’ve made it my mission to treat every client like family and provide unwavering support during life’s most difficult and joyous moments.

Supporting Clients Through Life’s Transitions

Many of the transactions I handle are joyful occasions—families buying their dream homes or moving to accommodate new chapters in their lives. But sometimes, the circumstances are more delicate.

Estate Sales: These situations often come after the loss of a loved one. Selling a family home filled with cherished memories can be deeply emotional for those left behind. My team and I do everything we can to support grieving families, whether it’s coordinating the sale of furnishings or simply offering guidance through the process.

Financial or Personal Hardships: Life can throw unexpected challenges, and sometimes families need to sell their homes to regroup. We approach these situations with care, ensuring our clients feel supported and empowered during a difficult time.

Regardless of the circumstances, I mentor all agents on my team to treat every client like family. That personal connection is the heart of what we do.

Building Lifelong Relationships

Most of the families we help are excited to start fresh in a new home, and it’s a privilege to make their transitions seamless and enjoyable. Over the years, these clients often become lifelong friends. In fact, 90% of my business comes from referrals or repeat clients.

Recently, I had the incredible honor of helping a third generation of one family buy their home. That trust and loyalty mean the world to me. While I’m not sure if I’ll still be working when the fourth generation is ready, I have no plans to retire anytime soon! Mentoring new agents to uphold our philosophy of treating clients like family ensures that legacy continues.
